Understanding — or far better yet, knowing how to apply — basic light patterns is the solid foundation to build upon as you progress in your craft.

Each light pattern showcased here helps you create a different mood and feel, and enables you to convey the emotions and stories you look to tell. So learning these evergreen light setups is helpful for anyone who wants to take their portrait photography skills to the next level.

Today's edition focuses on lighting designs when shooting female subjects.

A. 4 Light Patterns You Need to Know

Flat Lighting

Involves minimal shadows and even illumination across the subject's face. Often used to achieve a very soft, flattering look.

Broad Lighting

Illuminates the side of the subject's face facing the camera. We place the light source to the subject's side.

Butterfly Lighting

Commonly used for beauty and glamour work. We illuminate the subject's face directly from the front, creating a soft and flattering effect — and the eponymous shadow in the form of a butterfly under the nose.

Rembrandt Lighting

Creates a traditional, painterly look. We illuminate the subject's face at a slight angle, with a triangle-shaped light on the cheek opposite the light source.

B. Once the Basics Are in Place

Ultimately, these general guidelines can vary depending on the individual features of the subject and the desired effect. Once you've mastered the primary building blocks, you can take it up a notch and modify the light or add secondary lights.
