Understanding the four Properties of Light is crucial, as they enable precise control and manipulation of lighting conditions to achieve the desired creative effect.

Combining all four properties — quality, intensity, direction, and color — will deliberately and effectively shape your photographs' mood, depth, and visual impact.

A. Quality of Light

The term Quality of Light may initially seem misleading or confusing.

The term does not refer to the quality of the lighting gear itself, but rather to the characteristics, attributes, and visual effects of the light that falls on the subject. It is a designation that describes light's specific properties (= qualities), such as its softness or harshness. It solely focuses on the perceptual and aesthetic aspects of the light and how it influences the overall appearance of the photograph. It pertains to how the light interacts with the subject, the resulting shadows and highlights, and the mood or atmosphere it creates.

Diffused light has a gentle, soft effect with gradual transitions between highlights and shadows, while harsh light creates strong, defined shadows. The Quality of Light is influenced by the size, distance, and modifiers used with the light source.

When working in the studio, lighting modifiers are the primary tools that modify and control the Quality of Light. Examples include reflectors, diffusers, umbrellas, softboxes, and snoots. These modifiers help you shape, soften, or redirect the light to achieve the desired lighting effect, aka Quality of Light.

So, it's worth noting that while gear quality — the type of lighting equipment, modifiers, or cameras — can play a role in creating or modifying the characteristics of light, the term Quality of Light itself primarily refers to the visual attributes and effects of the light rather than the gear itself.

B. Direction of Light

The term Direction of Light refers to the path and angle from which the light comes and falls onto the subject.

It involves determining the position and orientation of the light source relative to the subject to achieve specific lighting effects.

By manipulating the direction and angle of light, you will control the shadows and highlights on a subject and its overall shape and texture.

Examples: Front lighting, where the light is positioned in front of the subject, creates minimal shadows and is often used for even (flat) illumination. Side lighting, where the light is placed to the side, will enhance texture and add depth by casting shadows. Backlighting, where the light is behind the subject, can create silhouettes or add a rim of light around the edges.

By manipulating the direction of light, you will purposefully sculpt the three-dimensional form of your subjects.

C. Quantity of Light

The term Quantity of Light refers to the brightness or strength of the light falling on the subject.

It is a measure of how much light is reaching the subject or the camera sensor. The Quantity of Light directly affects the image's exposure, influencing the overall brightness, contrast, and level of detail. Understanding and controlling light intensity is essential in achieving the desired mood in a photograph.

Quantity (= Intensity) can be adjusted by manipulating factors such as the distance between the light source and the subject, the power settings on the light source, or by using light modifiers.

Note I — Light Metering

In physics, the light intensity is measured in units such as lumens or candelas. When using a light meter, you will get referred to f/stops, as this is the unit we photographers are most accustomed to.

Note II — Lighting Ratios

Lighting ratios describe the contrast between a photograph's brightest and darkest areas. A low lighting ratio (e.g., 1:1) means the shadows are not significantly darker than the highlights, resulting in more even lighting. A high lighting ratio (e.g., 8:1) creates a strong contrast between shadows and highlights, resulting in a more dramatic image.

D. Color of Light

The term Color of Light refers to the specific hue or temperature of the light that illuminates a subject.

Different light sources emit light with varying color temperatures, measured in Kelvin (K), commonly called color temperature in our field of work.

The color of light can range from warm (yellow or orange) to neutral (white) to cool (blue). For example, natural daylight and strobes tend to have a cooler, bluish tone, while incandescent bulbs produce a warmer, yellowish light.

Color Temperature significantly impacts a photograph's overall mood, atmosphere, and visual style. By manipulating a light's color (or choosing a specific Kelvin degree in your camera setting), you can evoke certain emotions, enhance a particular color palette, or create a distinctive ambiance in your images.

Note — What about B+W?

The absence of color in a result photo, such as black and white or grayscale, does not fall under the property of Color of Light.

B+W photography, or converting an image to grayscale, removes color information from the photograph, resulting in a monochromatic representation. In this case, the absence of color is an intentional decision to create a grayscale aesthetic.

While the color of light may have influenced the original color tones in the scene, converting the image to black and white eliminates the color information and focuses solely on tonal values, contrasts, and textures.

E. Conclusion

The properties mentioned before are just a few key aspects of photography lighting theory. Experimenting with different lighting setups and techniques will give you a better understanding of how light behaves and how to use it to create compelling photographs — including finding your unique lighting signature style.
